Pupils Interact with Professionals at Careers Fair

24th October 2023

Oakham School hosted a Careers Fair in the Smallbone Library for pupils in Forms 5, 6 and 7. The event was attended by professionals from a broad range of occupations, who were on hand to discuss career options with pupils.

The purpose of the event was to allow pupils to have open and informal conversations with professionals who have extensive experience and insight into their respective occupations.

The Careers Fair was visited by Alicia Kearns MP, Member of Parliament for Rutland & Melton and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. Alicia spoke with pupils about careers in politics.

Amongst the visiting professionals were nine Old Oakhamians, as well as a number of parents of current Oakhamians.

Pupils with an interest in medical and clinical professions were able to talk to doctors, a dentist, a vet, a surgeon, a physiotherapist, a radiologist and an occupational therapist. Representatives attended from all of three of the British Armed Forces, as well as Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Fire & Rescue.

STEM-focused pupils were able to talk careers with professionals in the fields of mechanical, electrical, structural, architectural and environmental engineering, and even a working airline pilot. Oakhamians were also able to speak with professionals from the fields of accountancy, law, investment management, journalism, estate agency, creative design, publishing and retail.

The event was hosted by Oakham School’s busy and proactive Careers Department. Led by Head of Careers and Progression Dr Rachael Pearson – who is a qualified careers advisor registered with the Careers Development Institute (CDI) and one of the first people in the UK to become a THE Accredited Counsellor – it also has a full-time UCAS and Careers Co-ordinator and a dedicated Work Experience Officer, as well as  coordinators for Oxbridge and Clinical applications.
