Oakham School Hosts Inaugural Girl’s BOWS Cricket Festival

11th July 2023

Oakham School hosted the inaugural girls’ BOWS Cricket Festival.

BOWS is an annual friendly tournament held between Oakham School, Brighton College, Wellington College and Sedbergh, with the venue rotating each year.

While the boys’ tournament was this year held at Brighton College, Oakham School hosted the inaugural girls’ BOWS Festival.

The BOWS Festival has been an annual tradition for 16 years, but the introduction of a parallel event for the girl’s teams marks a huge step forward for girls’ cricket at Oakham.

The highly competitive girls’ tournament was won by a strong Sedbergh side, who claimed victories over Brighton and Oakham. Brighton also won two of their matches, but it was Sedburgh who came out on top owing to their run rate.

Next year’s venues have already been selected, with the the girls travelling to Wellington College and the boys to Sedbergh.

Oakham School runs five girls’ cricket sides, with this number set to grow thanks to a strategic focus on the development of girls’ cricket at the School and the increasing popularity of the women’s game.
