Individual Music Lessons

We are committed to providing high quality tuition and incredibly wide performance opportunities for all interested pupils. The majority of our large team of dedicated teachers have active professional performing careers and seek to inspire the next generation through individual lessons in Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion and Drums, Guitar, Keyboard Studies and Singing.

Over 40% of our pupils learn a musical instrument and well over 500 individual music lessons and rehearsals for 20 different ensembles take place each week. ABRSM music exams are held each term, for which there is a very high success rate, with many of our pupils achieving merits and distinctions. We also offer LCM Music Theatre examinations in school, and prepare pupils for Rock School examinations taken at local public exam centres. However, we recognise that examinations are not the only appropriate target for all young musicians, and therefore provide performance opportunities (including our annual English Song Competition and Piano Duet Competition) as an alternative goal.

In recent years, many of our pupils have gone on to study at major UK music colleges, including the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity Laban.  A number of pupils have achieved Oxbridge organ scholarships. Notable Old Oakhamians include: Daniel Hyde (Informator Choristarum, Magdalen College, Oxford), Paul Spicer (conductor and composer) and Jonathan Hellyer-Jones (Precentor and Organist, Magdalene College, Cambridge).

Many of our accomplished singers win choral scholarships at university, or sing in a cathedral choir for their gap year.

The School acts as an exam centre for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). We also offer Music Theatre exams run by the London College of Music. Pupils can also take Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool and ABRSM Jazz exams at other local centres.
