Upper School Spanish enjoyed a trip to Stamford Arts Centre this week to see Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film ‘Madres Paralelas’ (Parallel Mothers).
The film stars Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit and features Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Israel Elejalde, Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma.
An award winning film, (Penelope Cruz, Volpi Cup for Best Actress and two nominations at the 94th Academy Awards for Best Actress (Cruz) and Best Original Score (Iglesias), Parallel Mothers tells the story of Photographer Janis Martínez who does a photo shoot with renowned forensic archaeologist Arturo. She asks him if his foundation will help excavate a mass grave in her home village, where her great-grandfather and other men from the village were killed and buried during the Spanish Civil War. The result of their friendship is a baby, which brings both joy and heartache. This and buried secrets from the Spanish Civil War makes this film a perfect compliment to several IB and A-level themes. It has also provided our Upper School students with much to talk about in class and references for their oral exams and the written examination papers.
