U19 and U14 netball teams crowned Regional Champions!

Congratulations to our U14 and U19 girls for being crowned Regional Champions at the Regional Schools’ Netball tournament and reaching the National Netball Finals for the third year running. Well done also to the U16 team for being placed 3rd.

Oakham’s U14 netball team finished the tournament undefeated beating Chellaston (11-2), Branston (11-5), Wellingborough (8-5) and Nottingham Girls’ High School (11-2). The semi-finals saw them win against West Bridgford (13-2) and the final was against Wellingborough where they claimed a comfortable victory of 11-3.

Meanwhile, the U19 team played against Trent (15-10), Stamford (8-6), Northampton High School (10-12) and Nottingham Girls’ High School (18-6). The semi-final and final saw the squad delivering strong scores over their opponents Oundle and Repton, winning 14-7 and 20-10 respectively.

“I am so proud of all the girls and having two teams qualifying for the National Finals and being crowned East Midlands Champions is an incredible achievement,” says Graduate Sports Fellow, Miss Elise Whearity.

“Every player in the U14 team played some of the best netball I have ever seen them play! It was a phenomenal performance by all, and a brilliant foundation to build on ready for the National Finals!”

Ms Isobel Beighton, Teacher of PE, adds, “The U19 1st VII team faced tough opposition but remained composed and calm under pressure. They played some very impressive netball! Captain Lara and vice-captain Freddie led the team confidently throughout the day and displayed some fantastic leadership skills. We are all now looking forward to preparing for the National Finals in March!”

Oakham’s netball success follows Oakham’s senior boys indoor hockey team who recently reached the National Finals for the fifth consecutive year. Oakham’s talented young sportsmen and women repeatedly represent the School in National Finals showing the quality of sport on offer at the School.
