The lunchtime recital on Wednesday 24 November was a rare treat. The french horn is the most beautiful of all the brass instruments, but also notoriously the hardest to play, so to hear it played so elegantly by two young players (Daniel Kelly and Joshua Davis) was an absolute joy.

Joshua opened the programme with the lively Jousting by John Firth which displayed plenty of rhythmic vitality and energy throughout his assured performance. From the first note of his second piece, the haunting Nocturno by Franz Strauss, Joshua took control of the stage, and his phrasing and control was a delight.

Daniel began his performance with the first movement of the triumphant Strauss Concerto No.1. His clearly delivered opening fanfare set the scene for a performance of great control and style which was followed by Hunters’ Moon by Gilbert Vinter, where again he showed superb control throughout the entire register.

To hear two horn players play with such confidence was a delight, and the audience’s warm applause at the end was a lovely reflection of thanks for the work put in by both boys. Bravo!
