Swimming Success for Oakham School

The boys U18 swimming team recently made Oakham School history by winning the Medley relay at the Stowe Invitational Swimming Gala for the first time. The boys competed in a field above their ages which made their win even more impressive. They were also placed 3rd in the Freestyle relay.

The team of Jacob (F3), Harry (F5), Adam and Ben (F6) competed against schools including Eton, Kings High, Stowe, Warwick Boys, Stamford and Oundle and swam in several heats before making it through to the final.

Assistant Director of Sports, Peta Girdwood said, “A huge well done to the boys. It was the best performance for Oakham in years, in an incredibly competitive field. With all four boys competing above their age, they should be very proud of their achievement. They are now looking forward to the next major swimming gala of the school year, the Bath and Nalson Cup at the London Aquatic  Centre.”

The competition also saw Oakham’s U18 girls securing 5th place in the Medley and 4th place in the Freestyle. The U16 girls finished 6th place in the Medley and 5th place in the Freestyle.

Other swimming news includes Jacob’s outstanding performance as he competed at the English National Winter Short Course Championships at Ponds Forge, where he raced in the 50m,100m,200m, 400m freestyle  and the 50m and 100m backstroke. He swam personal bests in 5 of his events at the Championships and is currently ranked as the fastest U14 in the country at 50m, 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly long course and 50m Freestyle short course.  He is now looking forward to the Summer Long Course Nationals next year as well as competing in a range of club galas.
