Summer Term Careers News Summary

It has been a busy term in the Careers Department.

The School has been approved as an SAT test centre for US applications for both internal and external candidates and Oakham should run its first test in October.

Form 4 have had lessons focusing in researching their interests and strengths and associated careers. They have given presentations and completed a group work enterprise activity focused on developing and promoting a product. They also undertook the online Morrisby Profile, a psychometric test. This will produce a report which students can view and which will form the basis of their careers interview in the Autumn Term of Form 5.

Form 5 had four taught sessions as part of their ‘Bridging Activities’ fortnight, which involved learning about interview types and strategies, as well as workplace behaviour, workplace culture and understanding tax and payslips.

Form 6 have had ‘After Oakham’ sessions on the UCAS process as well as the opportunity to take part in webinars on Degree Apprenticeships and overseas university applications. They have registered on UCAS Hub and have begun preparing applications. Some have also taken part in specialised seminars on the US application process.

Form 7 enjoyed a talk by four entrepreneurial Old Oakhamians, Jess Armitage (13), Ivo Nanev (14), Tia Naneva (17) and Tom Home (14), about entrepreneurships and different pathways.

Despite the ongoing disruption to national working patterns caused by the pandemic, there are some fantastic Work Experience opportunities. Placements planned for the summer break include Leicester Infirmary, Jeakins Weir construction, Newton Fallowell estate agents, Rutland Water and Technelec, amongst others. Further placements, including political and parliamentary ones, are planned for October when further restrictions lift.

The Careers Department organises several events over the year for pupils to explore their Careers options and for the Autumn Term events planned include a Careers Fair and the Form 7 Futures Conference.
