Summer Term 2021 Rugby Highlights

Oakham’s rugby alumni have seen further success in recent weeks with Old Oakhamians Jack van Poortvliet (19) and Sam Costelow (19) playing in the U20 Six Nations, with England and Wales.

Jack, England captain, led his side to a rousing comeback against France, earning himself Man of the match.

Old Oakhamian rugby star Hamish Watson (10) is on tour in South Africa with the British and Irish Lions. “We are incredibly proud that Hamish’s outstanding performances throughout the Six Nations have been recognised,” says Director of Sport, Iain Simpson.

Hamish made his mark during the recent Six Nations not only for being a key part of the Scottish team, but also for winning the coveted, fan-voted, title of ‘Guinness Six Nations player of the tournament’.

Hamish joins OOs Lewis Moody and Tom Croft in playing for the Lions with Oakham coach Ian Smith mentoring and coaching all three.  Hamish recently dedicated his prestigious Lion Jersey to Ian as recognition for playing such a massive role in his career.

Meanwhile Oakham Sports Scholar Jacob (Form 7) has also been selected to join the Senior Leicester Tigers’ rugby team for the 2021/22 season.

Another fantastic highlight for Oakham’s rugby players has been the inspirational visit by one of England’s greatest ever rugby players Martin Johnson, who captained England to victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
