Spanish after Oakham

The Spanish Department welcomed back Gina Tyler OO (‘20), who came to talk to their Upper School students about languages post-A-level. Currently, on her gap year, Gina has just come back from Murcia, Spain, where she was working as an au pair for a Spanish family for three months.

Entertaining them with anecdotes of living with and working for a Spanish family, Gina talked about the benefits of this experience and how her eyes have been opened about Spanish life and culture.

Having had twelve weeks of immersion, Gina feels very confident with her Spanish, demonstrated when she spoke in Spanish with Mrs Fernandez about immigration in Murcia. A proud moment for her teachers to see how she has continued to progress.

Gina offered the pupils some good advice on how to revise for exams and how to pick a university course. Next year, it will be Durham for Gina, where she will study Modern Languages, Spanish, French, and Italian. She chose Durham over her other choices as this will give her the opportunity, in her third year, to spend time in both Spain and France and not just one country, which is something to consider when deciding on a course.

So, the tradition of students studying Spanish at Oakham and continuing at university level continues with recent news of Pippa Dabbs (IB Higher, Exeter) currently in Madrid teaching at a school with Eve Scott (IB Higher, Newcastle), Meg Lockwood (IB Higher, Cambridge) currently on her year abroad in Costa Rica and Felix Abbott (A-Level) currently in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
