Seventh formers attend ‘Futures Conference’

Seventh formers recently attended the ‘Futures Conference’ jointly organised by the Careers Department and Upper School team. The all-day event showcased the different programmes and support available to help pupils plan for their next step. It included external speakers delivering talks and workshops on interview skills, university and apprenticeships.

In the morning, pupils attended a series of seminars of their choice ranging from ‘Meaningful Gap Years’ by Raleigh International’, ‘Nail that Interview’ by Loughborough University, ‘Skills for the Future: Are you 2030- ready’ by Mr Joseph Sanders and ‘From undergraduate to entrepreneur’ by Old Oakhamian Jess Armitage. Oakham School’s Work Experience Co-ordinator, Mrs Caroline Atkinson, led a session on apprenticeships.

Before lunch, they all listened to an excellent keynote address on ‘Preparing for the Unexpected’ by Bold Voices, whose vision is that all young people have the right to receive an education free from gender inequality and gendered violence.

In the afternoon pupils attended a variety of Workshops including ‘Travelling Safely: holidays and gap years without your parents’ by Lost Earth, ‘Transitioning to and from university’ held by The University of Sheffield, ‘Be a Better Ally’, by Teacher of English, Mrs Dixon-Dale and ‘Supporting others’ mental health’ by Kimberley Keeber. There was also an Extended UCAS clinic by Oakham’s UCAS Coordinator, Mrs Elliot, and those interested in studying Law could attend a Virtual Mock Trial.

Head of Careers and Progression Dr Rachael Pearson said, “The conference enabled our pupils to think about their next step and to learn more about higher education, apprenticeships, gap years and the pathways and opportunities available.”

The next event hosted by the Careers Department will be the Careers Fair this Friday, which will be opened by MP Alicia Kearns and will give Forms 5-7 the opportunity to meet different employers offering a range of options.

Oakham School’s Career Department hosts numerous events each year, including a Careers Fair, A HE Fair, UCAS events and workshops with external speakers. Pupils can also arrange additional individual meetings with members of the Careers Department and network with Old Oakhamians through The Hub, our online alumni portal.
