School soloists excel at Oakham Choral Society concert

The first Oakham Choral Society concert since December 2019 took place in the School Chapel on Saturday 11 December, under the direction of School Organist, Harry Jacques. These concerts always offer the chance for our pupils and staff to collaborate with members of the local community, and this concert was no exception.

The programme featured two major choral works – Purcell’s ode, Come, ye sons of art and Handel’s Foundling Hospital Anthem – and it was good to have a number of Oakham staff and pupils (both past and present) singing in the choir, as well as former Oakham music scholar Adam Hebditch joining the professional orchestra of current staff and visiting professionals. Three accomplished School vocal soloists featured in these two works, with Eliza & Evie soprano and Zsolti baritone excelling in these challenging Baroque works, holding their own admirably alongside a visiting professional singer.

These concerts often offer an opportunity for a short concerto performance, and this term’s concert featured Form 7 music scholar Owen performing Mozart’s first Horn Concerto. This was the perfect work to showcase Owen’s rich sound and strong musicianship, and both he and his fellow vocal soloists are to be congratulations on giving such high-quality performances at the end of a busy term.
