Rugby Training Camp and OO rugby update

The first week in September saw Oakham rugby players attend a four-day pre-season training camp at Greshams School.

The fun and engaging training sessions helped the boys develop key rugby skills and improve their understanding of the game. They also enjoyed playing some competitive matches, beating St Josephs, The Leys and Bishop Stortford. The boys’ motivation was high after having had an inspirational training session in the summer term with Martin Johnson, who captained England to victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Meanwhile Old Oakhamian Jack Van Poortvliet (’19) skippered Leicester Tigers to victory during their pre-season fixture vs Jersey Reds on 27 August. His teammate and fellow Old Oakhamian Jacob Cusick (’21) also helped the team win, scoring with his first touch.

Old Oakhamian Sam Costelow (’19)saw victory playing for Scarlets during the last pre-season warm up game before the Premiership starts on 18 September.

Last week Old Oakhamian Hamish Watson (10) visited the School to give his Lions Jersey to Oakham coach Ian Smith. Hamish had dedicated the jersey to him for being his mentor and for playing such a massive role in his career. Hamish Watson said, “I would have never made it as a pro rugby player without this man. Thanks for everything Mr Smith.” Hamish also kindly donated a Lions jersey to the School.
