Pupils learn about Argentinian culture

Pupils tasting Argentinian food

A delayed celebration of El Día de La Tradición, the birthday of Argentine poet Jose Hernandez, celebrated nationally in Argentina on 10 November, saw Form 6 students of Spanish tasting some traditional foods and learning more about the Argentinian culture.

They sampled ‘dulce de leche’ (caramalized milk), alfarores (shortbread style biscuits filled with dulce de leche and covered in icing, chocolate or desiccated coconut) and mate, also known as chimarrão or cimarron. They also tried a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused drink made by soaking dried leaves of the yerba mate in hot water and served with a metal straw in a container typically made from a calabash gourd, but also in some areas made from a cattle horn.

Language Assistant Florencia, who is from Argentina,  gave a presentation to the pupils on Argentinian culture and traditions.

Head of Spanish, Mr Cameron Pauls said, “All the pupils enjoyed the session, in particular the tasting all the delicacies. I would like to thank Florencia for giving them a unique peek into the many aspects of Argentinian culture.”
