Pupils inspired by talk on Fintech during Careers Week

Oakham School’s Careers Department welcomed financial experts Jason Bates and Alan Desira for a riveting talk about the rise of digital technologies in banking (Fintech) and the skills needed to work in this sector. 

Jason Bates co-founded two digital banks (Monzo and Starling). He also co-founded 11:FS, a growing Fintech consultancy and is currently creating new banks and customer propositions around the world.

Alan Desira has worked in Financial Services for Global Wholesale/Investment Banks and is now a tech/Fintech entrepreneur. He co-founded tech company, Metrikus, which focuses on Smart Buildings and air quality.

Jason and Alan spoke about some of the key skills that can be applied to career success in Fintech including good communication and team working, proficiency in IT, innovation and ability to meet deadlines. They also stressed the importance of being authentic and finding the right job for you.

Head of Development, Mr Bobby Youngwood, said of the talk, “This was a great opportunity for pupils to learn the different career options within Fintech, hear about their experiences and how to succeed in the sector.”

Oakham offers many subjects including Business, Computer Science, Maths, and Design Technology, ensuring pupils have all the tools needed to embark on a successful career in Fintech or the finance industry. The School also works closely with external partners and contacts, as well as its extensive alumni network, to introduce students to careers and work experience.
