Pupils geared up for Service Weekend

This weekend is always a highlight in Oakham’s calendar as over 500 pupils participate in activities for Service Weekend.

Held twice a year in the Spring and Winter terms, Service Weekend gives pupils an opportunity to do something out-of-the-ordinary as part of their D of E award, CCF training or Voluntary Action work.

CCF Recruits will be deployed to the Stanford training area in Norfolk to practice fieldcraft led by Forms 6 and 7.  Form 5 will be spending Saturday on the ranges at Thetford completing their cadet qualification shoot, which will involve shooting at distances of 100m and 200m.

Meanwhile, pupils working towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold D of E awards are setting out on their cycling, walking or rowing expeditions in picturesque locations all over the country. One group will be walking in Rutland, a few cycling and walking groups will be in the Peak District, while others will be rowing down the River Ouse or sailing in the Solent. They have all independently planned their journeys, as well as prepared supplies for the weekend.

Pupils involved in Voluntary Action will be helping in a number of different areas within the community. Groups of pupils, accompanied by members of staff, will be assisting at the Food Bank in Langham, volunteering at Rocks by Rail, holding a charity car wash and helping out with Oakham in Bloom.
