Powerful Production of A Monster Calls

16th May 2024

Oakham’s Middle School actors have delivered a powerful production of A Monster Calls, earning them standing ovations from their spellbound audience.

Under the expert direction of Director of Drama Gilly Norell, the young actors displayed exceptional maturity and talent to bring this adaptation of Patrick Ness’s beloved novel to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (QET).

Two different casts took on the leading roles over four nights, supported by a talented ensemble, making each performance a unique and unforgettable journey for both the actors and the audience.

In a production like A Monster Calls exceptional special effects, set design and movement play pivotal roles in bringing the story to life and immersing the audience in its fantastical world. Oakham School’s talented crew should be congratulated on skilfully integrating these elements to help the young cast produce a moving and haunting piece of theatre.

Director of Drama Gilly Norell said: “I’m incredibly proud of what our pupils have accomplished.

“Their commitment to the production and ability to convey such complex emotions have been truly remarkable.

“It has been a pleasure to see the cast’s confidence and collaboration develop as we brought this production to life. Their sustained trust and belief in the play, the direction, and most importantly each other, have been exemplary.”

With their triumphant production, Oakham School’s Drama Department has proven once again that age is no barrier to artistic excellence, reaffirming the School’s commitment to nurturing creativity and self-expression in all its students.

Each year Oakham School’s QET hosts an eclectic line-up of productions, from cutting edge drama to full-scale musicals. Our next production will be the wonderful and uplifting Lower School Production of The Lion King JR.
