We send our hearty congratulations to Peter Lawson (60), 1584 Society President, who has been recognised for his years of service to Rutland and beyond with a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Peter was recognised for his service to the Arts in Rutland, and has been a generous supporter of the Arts, both within Oakham School and the entire Rutland community.
A chorister while at Oakham School, Peter’s love of music has never wavered. Since his retirement, he has devoted much of his time to furthering Rutland’s musical ambitions, founding Arts for Rutland in 2010, and later Music in Lyddington. When asked how being recognised made him feel, he responded, “Very proud of Rutland, actually, with such a vibrant community here; many people contributed to make this award possible, and I wish to thank them all.”
When asked how Peter views his continued support of Oakham School in relation to his service to arts in Rutland more generally, he sees no distinction. “Oakham School, and particularly its music department, expertly run by Peter Davis, is a vital part of Oakham and the wider Rutland community.”
In the citation for the award, it said Peter’s “engaging and approachable style, matched by his selfless commitment to his causes, empowered others to rise to the challenge” of bringing the arts to life in Rutland.
Peter has dedicated most of his life to Oakham School, first as a boy, then as a parent, then as Chairman of Trustees, and most recently as the 1584 Society President; throughout he has offered his steadfast and generous support to Oakham School’s artistic endeavours.
Congratulations, Peter, it is undoubtedly well deserved!
