OO President David Gilman shares his journey from Oakham to Director of Sky News

David Gilman (89), Old Oakhamian President and Senior Director at Sky News, visited the School on Friday and spoke to the Form 5 iMedia class about his journey from Oakham, to the studios of Sky News.

David talked about the importance of considering the target audience at all times when working in the media, and to review work continuously in order to produce material that is relatable to them.

Teacher of iMedia Henry Deane said, “The pupils benefited greatly from the individual attention David gave them: reviewing and feeding back his opinion on their work, and encouraging their creativity as they complete their coursework task.”

Alumni Manager Rebecca Maddocks said, “It was so wonderful to welcome back David and to reunite him with his old stomping ground, particularly the lighting box in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (QET)! The QET meant so much to David as it was here that he first got a glimpse of what it was like to be in charge of a tech system and where he spent much of his time during School.”

Rebecca continues, “The insight Old Oakhamians can offer to our current pupils is invaluable. Our Alumni network is rich with vibrant and inspirational stories, which can only benefit and enrich the inquisitive minds of Oakhamians, as they begin their journey into adulthood.”

Oakham has its own exclusive networking platform, The Oakham Hub. To find out more, click here: https://thehuboakham.com/.
