Oakham School Confirmation Service

On Saturday 22 January, the Rt. Revd Donald Allister, Bishop of Peterborough, confirmed 49 pupils. It was the largest confirmation group since 1992 and included those that were unable to be confirmed last year.

Since October, Oakham’s Chaplain, Fr Tim Tregunno has been visiting the candidates in their Houses to help with their confirmation preparation and on Saturday the confirmands demonstrated their commitment to the Christian faith, supported by friends and family. Tutors, Housemasters and Housemistresses, the Headmaster, and the Senior Leadership Team were also invited.

The service took place in the School Chapel with the assistance of the Chamber Choir, who performed Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine, movements from Mozart’s Missa Brevis in F, and communion motets by Ola Gjeilo and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

In his sermon, the Bishop preached about how he had been confirmed 55 years ago, but it was a sermon trap as he reminded everyone it is not about him or us – it is all about Christ. Jesus should be at the centre of everything.

Thank you to Fr Tim Tregunno for organising the day and for making the occasion so memorable for the confirmands and their families. Also thank you to the Bishop of Peterborough for presiding over the confirmation, the Chamber Choir for singing so beautifully and the confirmands for being brave enough to make this personal commitment to Christ.
