Oakham School commemorates Armistice Day 2021

Oakham School fell silent on Thursday 11 November, to pay its respects to those Old Oakhamians and former staff who sadly died serving their country in the First and Second World Wars.

Current pupils and staff gathered in three Remembrance Services that were held simultaneously in Oakham to remember the fallen. The Remembrance Service in Chapel saw the Heads of School reading the names of the Old Oakhamians who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars. This was then followed by the Last Post and two minutes’ silence, accompanied with hymns and prayers to mark Armistice Day.

During the First World War, 405 Old Oakhamians fought for their country. Sadly 71 died, 15 of whom were killed during the Battle of the Somme.

In the Second World War, 689 Old Oakhamians and 14 Masters fought, of these 85 were killed.

Oakham School also marked Remembrance Sunday with a special service, involving members of its CCF and attended by the boarders.
