Oakham Sailing Success

06th October 2022
Congratulations to Oakham’s Sailing Team for beating all the other Schools and finishing second overall at the British Schools Dinghy Racing Association Midland Championships last weekend. The competition held at Farmoor Reservoir, Oxford saw 11 teams competing including Winchester College, Tunbridge School, Sherborne School, Sevenoaks School, Claires Court School, Reading Sailing Club, Magdalen College School and Rutland Sailing Club.

Thomas H, Will F, Harry B, Adam D, Evie H, and Georgiana C made up the team and won six out of the eleven races in the round-robin stage. They then had an exciting semi-final, which they won due to a mistake from the opposition. Their win put them in the final where they lost to their local team of Rutland Sailing Club (RSC). Given that the winning team are national champions, Oakham’s team’s performance was even more incredible.

Sailing & Adventurous Learning Coordinator, Ollie Hooper said, “Oakham improved as the day went on. Being the first school to finish and securing second place overall is impressive, especially for their first event as a new team. The year ahead holds great promise.”

Pupils of all ages can enjoy sailing at Oakham either as a competitive sport in their weekly games sessions or activities choice throughout the year.
