Oakham Pupils Step Into the Shoes of World Leaders

10th October 2023

A team of Form 7 Oakham School pupils attended the 23rd annual Model United Nations Conference at Cheadle Hulme School in Cheshire.

The premise of Model United Nations is that teams of pupils are tasked with representing the interests of countries on the international stage.

For this year’s conference, Oakham’s pupils were tasked with robustly representing the interests of both Ukraine and Syria.

Oakham School pupil Lucas received a prestigious debating prize for his work representing Ukraine in the Historical Committee.

Speaking about the success of the conference, Laurence Ward, Head of Politics and International Relations and leader of the Model United Nations group, commented: “I believe MUN is one of the most demanding, exciting, and valuable Upper School Co-curricular activities.

“It offers the opportunity for young leaders to build upon their current skillset and learn new invaluable skills such as communication, cooperation, negotiation, diplomacy, policy and resolution writing, and interpersonal skills.

“They are encouraged to ‘step into the shoes’ of world leaders and assess unfamiliar perspectives, allowing them to develop their knowledge, understanding, empathy and other key life skills which will benefit them beyond their school years.”
