Oakham pupils raise funds at their Kenya Charity Gala Dinner

Guests enjoyed a delightful evening of dining and fundraising at the Kenya Charity Gala Dinner held in the Barraclough hall last week. They raised approximately £4500 for the ‘Kenyan Schools Project’, which supports primary schools in rural Kenya.

The Dinner was organised by Form 6 pupils who are involved with the Project this year. From designing and producing invites, the menu, decorations, organising the auction prizes through to welcoming and serving guests on the night, the pupils ensured that the special event went without a hitch.

Form 6 pupil Daniel, who acted as auctioneer said, “It was excellent to see so many people supporting an amazing cause at the Gala Dinner. We had such a fun evening with some fierce bidding wars between the tables. Our thanks go to the Barraclough staff for providing such an enjoyable meal and to those who kindly donated prizes to the auction along with the generous donations all evening. The team is delighted at the success of the evening, and we look forward to continue our fundraising efforts in the coming weeks.”

The Kenya Schools Project is part of an expedition to Kenya that runs each year (Covid restrictions allowing) and in the months leading up to the trip, Form 6 students fundraise for resources to take with them. Whilst the pupils are in Kenya, they work in the primary schools, building and refurbishing classrooms, as well as teaching lessons and playing games with the children. Over the years Oakhamians have helped hundreds of children benefit from an improved educational environment which is a huge achievement . The project is also an opportunity for Oakhamians to give something back to people who are less fortunate.
