Oakham Cricketers fundraising for charity Chance to Shine

On Wednesday 23 June, the 1st XI Girls Cricket team will be running a 24-hour net session to raise money for the charity Chance to Shine. Their aim is to raise awareness for girls’ cricket within the school community whilst also raising money to help children get into the sport. Chance to Shine has helped over two million girls get into the game and over five million children in total.

Form 7 pupils and organisers of the event, Issy and Flo, said, “We believe this charity has a significant impact not only in our local community but across the UK. Cricket is a great team sport and helps to teach children important life skills such as teamwork and leadership.”  Flo and Issy continue, “Cricket has traditionally been a male-dominated sport but since the 2017 Women’s World Cup, it has really taken off within the UK and consequentially within the School. We had our first match that year and since then we have seen the sport grow within the School from a single team with two fixtures to two teams, a development squad and a full fixture list comparable to the boys.”

In September 2021 Oakham School will be celebrating 50 years of co-education and the strong Girls and Boys 1st XI Cricket teams in Oakham’s Cricket Department are a shining example of co-education at its finest.

The team is hoping to raise £500 for Chance to Shine, so if you can help them reach this target, please visit their Just Giving page at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/24hrnets
