Oakham becomes Stonewall Champion School

Oakham has become a ‘Stonewall Champion’ School after joining the LGBT equality organisation, which provides training for LGBTQ+ issues.

The Stonewall Champion School mark is an indication of those Schools committed to LGBTQ+ inclusivity and to tackling LGBTQ+ based bullying.

Housemaster Mr Lels Bonanno and Head of Religion and Philosophy Mrs Megan Fairley are being trained by Stonewall to deliver Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to staff on tackling HBT-phobic bullying, creating a trans-inclusive school and promoting gender equality in the classroom.

Mrs Fairley said, “We as a School, have pledged to work towards our Stonewall School Champions Bronze Award in 2020. As members of Stonewall we are given support, advice and resources in developing our provision for LGBTQ+ pupils and fostering respect and understanding of LGBTQ+ issues in our School community.”

Oakham is currently celebrating the LGBT+ History month with a series of seminars and talks, as well as displays and classroom discussions.
