Oakham athletes selected to compete in prestigious English Schools Athletics Championships

Oakham School athletes have been selected to compete in the prestigious English Schools Athletics Championships in Manchester this July.

“The English Schools Athletics Championships is probably the most difficult way to represent your county as a school sportsman or sportswoman,” said Director of Sport Iain Simpson. ” Athletes have to meet rigid qualifying standards over and above winning events at their county championships. For example, Form 4/5 boys must run under 2.00m for 800m just to qualify. We manage to qualify one or two athletes every year but this year we have managed to get 6 athletes qualified.”

Izzy S will be competing in the Senior Girls 400m, Sammy K in the Junior Girls 100m, Izzy J in the Junior Girls Javelin, Sofia B in the Inter Girls 300m, Fabian P in the Inter Boys 100m and Alex Mee in the Senior Boys Shot.

The pupils’ outstanding performances in the County Championships helped them secure places in the competition.

Iain adds, “ It is a fantastic achievement and will see the best athletes compete against each other. We wish them the best of luck.”
