New Decem Learn Leadership Skills at Matt Hampson Foundation

31st July 2023

Oakham School’s new senior prefect team, the Decem, enjoyed a team building and leadership day with the Matt Hampson Foundation.

Based at the Foundation’s Get Busy Living Centre in Burrough-on-the-Hill, pupils were challenged to a series of team-building tasks, including building a working rocket from a plastic bottle and pitching a fictional product to people with contrasting communication styles.

They also learnt more about the work the Foundation does for those with spinal injuries and were able to tour the centre and hear about the Foundation’s plans for future developments.

The day was led by rugby legends Dan Hipkiss and Geordan Murphy, both of whom now work full-time for the Foundation.

Mima, Deputy Head of School, says “It was a great way for the Decem to understand each other, and to realise how we will all work differently within a team.

“It was perfect for our first training session because it involved ways for us to get to know each other better too.

“I wouldn’t have changed anything about the day, and I think it’s definitely something other pupils should experience.”

Ed, part of the Decem Mental Health & Wellbeing team, added “Dan & Geordan’s enthusiasm helped everyone get involved and make the most of the day.

“I loved the opportunity to just get out and complete tasks as a team in the fresh air, as well as learning a bit about the psychology behind what’s going on when you lead, communicate and build a team.”
