Music at Lunchtime: Violin Recital

This week’s Music at Lunchtime featured Maya on the violin, accompanied by Cason Kang, in a programme that brought together music from the Romantic period and 20th-century repertoire.

Maya opened with three movements from Dvořák’s Romantische Stücke, Op. 75. The Cavatina set the tone with its lyrical and expressive lines, while the Capriccio introduced a lighter, more playful character. The Romance provided a flowing contrast, highlighting the interplay between violin and piano. Maya’s interpretation captured the warmth and charm of Dvořák’s writing, bringing out the distinct character of each movement.

The recital concluded with the first movement of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, Op. 14. This expansive and expressive movement combined soaring melodic lines with moments of tension and resolution. Maya’s playing reflected the balance between lyricism and intensity that defines the work, drawing the audience into its shifting moods.

The programme offered a contrast between the intimacy of Dvořák’s chamber writing and the broader, more dramatic scope of Barber’s concerto. Maya’s thoughtful approach to both styles made for an engaging and well-rounded performance.

The recording from this week’s concert is available online here.

Our next Music at Lunchtime recital will be on Wednesday 26 February 2025 and feature Form 5 pupil Elsa with music for violin by Amy Beach, Beethoven, & Brahms.
