Music at Lunchtime: Farewell Horn Recital

This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital was given by Form 7 music scholar Joshua with a memorable performance on the horn. Accompanied by Cason Kang, he bid farewell to Oakham School with his final lunchtime performance.

The recital commenced with Camille Saint-Saëns’ Morceau de Concert, op. 94, a miniature concerto featuring a series of variations. Joshua deftly navigated through the dynamic movements, from the rhythmic variations to the virtuosic flourishes of the final Allegro non troppo. An incredible finish too, he showed such control of the horn’s upper and lower ranges.

Next, he treated the audience to Mozart’s renowned Rondo movement from Horn Concerto No. 4. Despite its technical challenges, Joshua’s performance exuded joy and enthusiasm, inviting the audience to hum along with the familiar melody.

Concluding his recital with Gilbert Vinter’s Hunter’s Moon, Joshua embraced the playful nature of the piece, delighting in its fast-paced tempo and whimsical hunting motifs. With skilful hand-stopping and glissandi, he brought the music to life with humour and charm.

Joshua’s final lunchtime concert left a lasting impression on all who attended, what an incredible final concert- well done Joshua.

The recording from this week’s concert is available online here.

Our next Music at Lunchtime recital will be given after the half-term break by Form 6 pupil, Maya, who will be performing music for violin by Beethoven & Elgar.
