Music at Lunchtime: An Exceptional Violin Recital

Our final lunchtime recital of the term was given by Form 5 Music Scholar, Maya, who performed a selection of 19th-century music for violin, joined by Ms Anne Bolt on piano.

Maya began her programme with Légende, op. 17 by Romantic composer Henryk Wieniawski. The piece opened with great atmosphere with rippling semiquavers in the piano and a cantabile violin line. Maya handled the piece’s challenging double stops and technical demands with ease, leaving the audience captivated by the singing violin sound.

The second piece in Maya’s programme was Bedřich Smetana’s two-movement work From my homeland. Maya’s performance of the opening movement, Moderato, featured a soaring violin line above dramatic piano accompaniment. After an expressive slow introduction, the second movement, Andantino – Moderato, wove expressive melodies with lively dance themes, before flying into a fiery Presto finale.

Congratulations to Maya on a fantastic performance of two challenging works of Romantic violin music! Our lunchtime concerts resume at the start of the Summer Term; our next recital is on Wednesday 19 April and showcases selected performers from our recent Piano Duet competition.
