Music at Lunchtime: A Rich and Varied Horn Recital

This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital was given by Form 6 Music Scholar, Joshua, who performed a selection of music for horn, accompanied by Peter Davis on piano.

Joshua opened his programme with the Rondo from Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 2, a favourite of the horn repertoire, full of bounce and characteristic Mozart wit. The audience were then treated to a pair of lesser-known works for horn. The first was the opening movement from the horn sonata by twentieth-century composer Edwin York Bowen. Joshua’s performance embraced the cantabile horn lines and rich harmonies, with great passages of hand-stopping echo effects. Elegy, Joshua’s third piece, was written by Oakham’s own Director of Music, Peter Davis, and showed off the best of the horn’s warm and lyrical tone.

Joshua finished his programme with Alla Caccia by Alan Abbott. Complete with hunting horn calls and mysterious rubato passages, it made for a thrilling conclusion to the recital. Congratulations to Joshua for a fantastic recital, showcasing the horn’s characteristic warm tone and great technical accomplishment across a range of horn repertoire!

The recording from the recital is available here.

Next week’s Music at Lunchtime concert features music for piano trio and selected woodwind solos.
