Music at Lunchtime: A Remarkable Recital

Our Music at Lunchtime recital this week had a variety of accomplished musicians sharing their talents, namely Ottó (F4), Evie (F6) and Elsa (F4), all of whom are Music Scholars.

Ottó opened the recital with Three English songs by Roger Quilter. Dream Valley immediately immersed the audience in a world of serene beauty and longing, while he showcased his vocal agility and expressiveness in Over the Mountains, navigating the sweeping melodies with finesse. The final song of this collection was the beautiful Music When Soft Voices Die, which Ottó performed with real emotion.

Following these, Ottó switched to Musical Theatre, with two songs from the musical Guys and Dolls. Opening his heart to the audience with My Time of Day, Ottó showcased the emotions of a character who finally felt he had found someone to share important things with. Luck be a Lady, in contrast, was a high-energy song of hope, as he gambled this new love on the roll of a dice.

Evie then dazzled us with two stunning pieces on her violin. Starting with Allegretto tranquillo from Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in G major, she portrayed the folk-song-influenced piece with great joy and skill. Elsa then joined her on the piano for her second piece, the famous Czardas by Vittorio Monti. This piece is full of virtuosic bravura and both pupils gave us that in abundance to round off a really special lunchtime concert. We are privileged to have such talent in our Music Department.

The recording from today’s concert is available online here.

Next week’s concert will be given by Grace and Joshua, who will be performing a selection of piano and violin pieces by Mozart, Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns and Elgar.
