Music at Lunchtime: A Polished Cello Performance

This week’s Music at Lunchtime recital was given by Form 6 Music Scholar, Ethan, who performed a programme of music for ‘cello, accompanied by Anne Bolt and Peter Davis on piano.

Ethan opened his recital with the first movement of Kabalevsky’s renowned Cello Concerto No. 1 in G minor. Kabalevsky’s Allegro movement showcased the ‘cello’s lyrical side alongside ferocious technical passages, with rapid semiquaver figurations and a virtuosic cadenza.

Ethan then performed the opening Allegro from Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major. Surpassing the piece’s technical demands with ease, Ethan’s sensitive performance made the sonata into a wonderful piece of chamber music – a real treat for the audience in All Saints’ Church.

Congratulations to Ethan on an accomplished recital, giving polished performances of demanding works from the solo repertoire! Our next Music at Lunchtime recital is after half-term, on Wednesday 7 June, when Form 6 Music Scholar, Joshua, will be performing a selection of music for horn.

The recording from the recital is available here.
