Oakham Model United Nations (MUN) students are delighted to have accepted the honour of representing India, Philippines and Jamaica at the International MUN Conference to be held at the Cheadle Hulme School in October.
MUN is a hugely popular Upper School debating activity, which has over fifty members and there are a record nineteen student delegates attending this conference, the biggest delegation ever for Oakham.
The ultimate objective of every delegate is to produce, lobby support for, debate and ultimately pass a resolution on one of the topic areas within their committee. A resolution is the proposed solution to a problem and forms the focus of the debate. During these sessions, different delegates will advocate their country’s position on the matter at hand (supporting, condemning, or amending a resolution as the case may be), until a conclusion is reached as to whether the resolution and its measures should be adopted by the United Nations or not.
Form 6 pupil Iliofotisti recalls her experiences about the activity:-
“MUN is about the journey not the destination. What I have most enjoyed about the committed time I have spent as an ‘MUN-er’ has not been the prizes or victories that have been won, but instead what I have learnt about the world, the people who live in it and the problems that face us and the possible resolutions that could be used to solve these problems.”
