Lower School Pupils Compete in Annual Singing Competition

All four Lower School houses have been preparing hard in recent weeks for the annual inter-house singing competition, which this year offered them the opportunity to pick a song from the hit animated film, Sing!. The pupils have been practising since the first week of term, leading up to their performances on Monday 16 May in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

The competition was adjudicated by Director of Music, Peter Davis, who was quick to praise the commitment and house spirit which led to each house performing their chosen song confidently from memory. Ancaster opened the event with some beautiful singing in Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, with plenty of creativity demonstrated as different groups of pupils sang parts of the song. Peterborough House then raised the tempo with the Stevie Wonder/Ariana Grande song, Faith, with terrific solo singing by four boys and a fantastic, bright sound when the whole house sang together. Lincoln were quick to respond with Elton John’s I’m still standing, with an excellent whole house vocal sound, a creative approach and strong communication. Sargants concluded the sequence of songs with Taylor Swift’s Shake it off, which was hugely entertaining thanks to their commitment to communication and plenty of smiles.

All the houses are to be congratulated for giving such strong performances. Overall, Lincoln House was selected as Best Girls’ House, and Peterborough House as Best Boys’ House, with Ancaster and Sargant only a handful of points behind on the same score. There could only be one winner of the whole competition, and this year that was judged to be Lincoln House by just half a point!
