Latest News in the Chemistry Dept

Well done to the Upper School winners who gained three bronze and four silver awards in the Chemistry Olympiad this year. The young chemists successfully navigated some very challenging chemistry questions on topics including Covid test buffers, petrol and even whipped cream.

Among the first to congratulate the students was Head of Chemistry, Joanne Griffiths, who said, “A huge congratulations to Lucy, Ansh, Nikolay and Yufei who gained a Silver award as well as Steven, Daniel and Lucas who gained a Bronze Award.  These impressive results reflect their hard work and commitment. I have the pleasure of supporting some very talented individuals.”

Meanwhile a recent Chemistry Society (Chemsoc) session saw plenty of students taking on a chemistry challenge. Form 6 students worked on Cambridge Chemistry Challenge questions in preparation for their involvement in this extension exam paper next term.

Joanne said,  “These questions took concepts from the students’ curriculum and pushed them further to apply ideas to novel situations. The session really tested them and got everyone thinking. Great to see such academic involvement from our Oakham Upper School students.”

Oakham runs a rich programme of ChemSoc lectures, workshops and seminars, and practical extension sessions to inspire its students to take their study of Chemistry beyond School.
