Hambleton House winners of Middle School debating competition

Congratulations to Hambleton House who won the Middle School interhouse debating competition.

The final was a very close contest between Chapmans (proposing) and Hambleton (opposing), debating the highly emotive issue “This house believes that we should build on the green belt”.

“Both sides outlined some interesting and passionate views”, said Robert Evans, Teacher of History and Debating Coordinator. “Chapmans questioned the utility of the green belt and explained how building on it would help to ease the housing crisis; as well as the role played by areas of outstanding natural beauty and national parks. Hambleton countered their arguments offering up explanations on how preserving the green belt helps to prevent urban sprawl, as well as the scope to increase population density in cities and make use of brownfield sites.”

Rob continues, “The debate was very close, but victory went to Hambleton for their slightly more impassioned delivery and coordination as a team. However, both teams worked together to produce a dynamic debate and all should feel proud of the progress they have made during the course of the competition.”

Hambleton will now take on Round House for the ‘Champion of Champions’ trophy next week.
