Our youngest musicians excelled on the final afternoon of the first half of term (Friday 11 February), performing in a Lower School Showcase packed full with impressive ensemble, choral and solo performances.
The majority of the School’s Lower School music groups have weekly lunchtime rehearsals, and despite this concert falling after just five weeks of term, it was wonderful to hear how they are progressing. The Percussion Ensemble set the standard with their own devised piece featuring synchronised drumming and stick action, leading on to further polished performances by their instrumental colleagues in the Brass Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble and String Ensemble. The two choirs – Lower School Choir & Cantamus – also impressed with over 100 singers participating, with Cantamus giving enthusiastic performances of two pop songs, and the Lower School Choir impressing with Thomas Hewitt Jones’ challenging set of songs, Daydreams, commissioned for Oakham School in 2013.
Nine soloists also gave accomplished performances in front of their peers and an audience of staff and parents. Featured instrumentalists performed on the piano, saxophone, trombone and trumpet, and our vocal soloists included the recent prize winners from the whole school Singing Competition that had taken place on Sunday 6 February. Huge congratulations to all our young musicians on a terrific concert!
