On Tuesday night the Geography Department took 17 upper school geographers to Peterborough to listen to Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
He is named by the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’. In his talk titled ‘Living Dangerously’ he spoke about his early life, education and military career.
However, the focus was his record-breaking expeditions, including being the first to circumnavigate the earth through the polar axis without flying, running 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 days and being the first to traverse Antarctica unsupported.
Throughout, he spoke about the need for mental fortitude to succeed. In particular he focused on the importance of personal motivation and faith. Sir Ranulph was an inspirational talking that the students found interesting and engaging to listen to.
The talk was an excellent opportunity for pupils to immerse themselves in the world of travel and geography for a few hours. Excellent preparation for many of them who going off to study Geography at university.
