Form 3 Pupils Embrace MYP Community Day Projects

Oakham School’s Form 3 pupils held their annual MYP Community Day on Wednesday 14 June, with the aim of making a positive impact on the local community.

The theme of the day was sustainability, and every Form 3 pupil had a meaningful opportunity to take a physical action to improve the functioning of the communities they belong to.

The day began with an inspiring speech from MYP Community Project Coordinator Lucy Breag, whose meticulous planning and preparation was instrumental in the success of the day. Lucy emphasised the importance of individual actions in creating a sustainable future.

Working in groups, pupils spent the day in various locations around Oakham School and the surrounding area.

One team worked on increasing biodiversity around the campus by building bug houses and duck shelters. Another group organized a litter-picking event, cleaning up at a local canal and educating passers-by about the importance of reducing waste.

In the School’s textiles workshop, pupils designed summer dresses made from recycled materials. Another group worked with a local food bank to distribute food and raise awareness about food waste.

A team of three pupils battled the blazing heat to do a sponsored fun run in aid of Leicester Animal Rescue, smashing through their £500 target to raise over £600 for the charity.

At the end of the day, pupils gathered to share their experiences and reflect on the impact of their actions.

IB MYP Coordinator Dmitriy Ashton reflected: “Overall, the Form 3 MYP Community Day was a resounding success, showcasing the power of individual actions to create positive change.

“Oakham School’s pupils demonstrated that sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a tangible goal that can be achieved through collective effort and commitment.”
