Form 1 La Chandeleur Celebrations

On the 2nd of February, Form 1 took over the cookery room and celebrated La Chandeleur.

La Chandeleur, Candlemas in English, takes place on the 2nd of February as it is traditionally seen as the final cycle of Christmas

The French department’s tradition at Oakham School is to take our Lower 1 pupils into the cookery room. This year however, they also decided to extend this to the Form 1 classes also.

Therefore, this week all 1st form and Lower one classes took turn to get to the cookery room to make “crêpes.”

The colour and shape of the crêpes is meant to be evocative of the sun after a harsh winter whilst the use of wheat from the previous harvest is meant as a charm of good luck for the following harvest.

They had a great time and really enjoyed the cooking and eating but they had to do the cleaning and tidying at the end too… One Lower 1 even said after having done some cleaning and washing up: “I now understand what it is like to be a mum!”
