Fantastic term of Charity Giving and Voluntary Action

Oakhamians have served the community and participated in a variety of different charity giving initiatives this term.

Pupils involved in Voluntary Action have supported the local charity ‘Root and Branch Out’ by setting up a new garden in the Rutland Showground and have helped the Oakham Canal Project, tidying the areas near the bypass and Springfield Way. They have also worked hard for the Stamford Shakespeare Company sanding down and painting picnic tables and clearing the grounds.

Form 4 pupils have been helping the charity Vista, who support people with sight loss, in planning and brainstorming ideas to help raise money. They also helped organise a Vista fundraising initiative at Rutland Water.

Other fundraising endeavours this term include the 1st XI Girls’ Cricket team who raised more than size times their original target for the charity Chance to Shine, which encourages competitive cricket in state Schools, after running a 24-hour net session. Members of Form 5 also hosted a successful sticker sale raising money for the British Heart Foundation.

Oakham’s entire Lower School community was also delighted to join together to participate in a fancy-dress charity fundraising walk around Doncaster Close raising money for LIV charity.

Head of Voluntary Action and OSCA, Chris West-Sadler, said: “Even in these challenging times where our usual volunteering activities have been put into hibernation by Covid, we have found other ways to provide service to our local community and make a positive impact.  I am proud of the students for their efforts and we look forward to hopefully getting back to normal in the coming academic year.”
