The annual Lower School Inter-House Singing Competition returned to the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre at lunchtime on Monday 22 May. To mark the year of the Coronation, houses selected from the wide range of pop songs on the DCMS’ specially-curated Coronation Celebration Playlist 2023, resulting in an eclectic selection of songs from the back catalogues of Boney M, ELO, Madness and Queen.
It was wonderful to see the spirited way in which each house came together to perform. Sargants set the standard with ‘Mr Blue Sky’, presenting a well-prepared performance full of enthusiasm and smiles. Lincoln approached ‘Daddy Cool’ with bright singing and communication, and some rather imaginative adapted lyrics. Peterborough gave a highly dramatic performance of ‘Our House’, with flat caps, mimed instrumental solos and plenty of strong singing. To round off, Ancaster filled the whole stage with an entertaining rendition of ‘We are the champions’.
Director of Music, Peter Davis, celebrated all the pupils’ achievements in his adjudication, praising the creativity and vocal finesse of many performances, as well as setting targets for each house for next year. He than awarded the prizes for best girls’ house to Lincoln, and best boys’ house to Peterborough, with Peterborough winning the overall trophy for best house.
Congratulations to all the Lower School pupils for entering into this annual vocal challenge with such enthusiasm and good humour!
