Creative Writing Competition – the entries are now in!

Pupils from Form 1 to Form 6 have been exercising their creative writing skills by submitting poems and short stories they have written to enter Oakham School’s second annual creative writing competition.

All pupils were invited to write either a poem of no more than two sides of A4 or short story between 500 and 1,000 words on the theme of ‘Truth’ or a subject of their choice. The entries will be judged in two categories: 14 Years and Under and 16 Years and Over and the winners will be announced by celebrated poet Luke Kennard at a virtual ceremony on 15 May.

Teacher of English, Dr Emma Reddy, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming Luke, albeit virtually, to Oakham School on 15 May and hearing him read aloud the winning entries.”

Luke Kennard is a poet and novelist who lives in Birmingham. His second book of poems The Harbour Beyond the Movie (Salt, 2007) was shortlisted for the Forward Prize, making him, at the time, the youngest writer to be nominated. His 5th collection, Cain (Penned in the Margins, 2016), was shortlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize 2017. His first novel, The Transition (4th Estate, 2017) was longlisted for the Desmond Elliott award. He lectures at the University of Birmingham in the School of English.
