Classical Civilisation pupils visit the British Museum

Form 4 Classical Civilisation students recently visited the British Museum to see first-hand many of the collections and artefacts which they study in their course.

The objects on display ranged from the awe-inspiring and world-famous Parthenon sculptures to the small but historically fascinating coins issued by Mark Antony and Cleopatra.

Head of Classics Dr Will Leveritt said, “It is always a great experience for the pupils to walk through the museum and see the real objects, which connect them to the ancient world, all those years ago.”

Pupils comments included:

AY A: “I really enjoyed the trip. The museum was huge.”

Zach G: “I really enjoyed room 19” (this gallery houses the reliefs from the temple of Athena Nike showing the Greeks fighting the Persians at Marathon).

Harry C: “I really enjoyed the ancient statues and artifacts.”

Classical Civilisation at Oakham School may be chosen at GCSE without any prior study, and no Latin or Greek is involved. It may also be taken up as a new subject at A-level without prior study.
