Form 6 and 7 Classical Civilisation and Form 7 IB English students joined forces to do a radio play reading of Oedipus the King.
Form 7 took on the roles of the main characters of Sophocles’ tragedy, with Form 6 and Dr Leveritt performing the choral odes.
Head of Classics, Dr Will Leveritt, said: “Doing a radio play reading is a great way for our students to immerse themselves in the language and drama of our Classical Civilisation texts. Sitting around a table together with students taking on the roles of different characters brings to life the language of these Classical plays.”
First performed in 429 BC, Oedipus the King follows the king of Thebes, Oedipus, realising that he has, years prior, married his mother and murdered his father, and that his great crimes are the cause of the terrible plague which has been rampaging through his city.
Doing a radio play reading of Classical plays such as Oedipus the King is one of the many ways that Oakham School’s Classics Department brings the culture of antiquity to life. In November Form 3 pupils visited Bath to explore its extensive Roman remains.
