Oakham School recently had a ‘Phab’ day with a national charity, after inviting local young people with disabilities to the campus for a day of activities.
As part of its Voluntary Action over Service Weekend, the Oakham community came together to host an exciting day for our visitors from local groups including Aiming High and The Rutland Disabled Youth Forum. They were invited to take part in a whole host of activities as part of Oakham School’s affiliation to the Phab charity.
Several engaging events took place throughout the day including cake decorating, sporting games, karaoke and a drumming session with Oakham School’s Director of Music Peter Davis. During their time at the School, the visitors were also treated to a few magic tricks and decorated their own tote bags which they then took home with them.
Established in 1957, Phab is a leading national charity enabling both disabled and non-disabled children and adults to take part in a wide range of social and sports/ leisure activities which are fully inclusive.
Janine Williams, Challenge Events and National Development Manager at Phab, said: “We are thrilled and delighted that Oakham has joined the Phab family. We’d like to say thank you to our guests from The Rutland Disabled Youth Forum and Aiming High as this was a fantastic event.”
“Phab’s aim is to give disabled and non-disabled children, young people and adults the same opportunities; promoting independence, reducing social isolation and building strong friendships, all whilst having great fun together.”
Kelly Gibbons, who oversaw this Phab event, said “It was great to see our Form 6 and 7 pupils showing leadership to ensure they were organised to help the running of the day whilst also creating a warm and welcoming environment for our guests. Our pupils showed kindness whilst connecting with the guests from our local Rutland community at the same time. It was fantastic to see that they were able to embed the Phab ethos to reduce social isolation and build friendships along the way. We have more events planned throughout the year, including a Christmas Party in December, which our pupils are very excited about.”
One pupil said: “It was a really mind-opening experience that gave me the opportunity to meet amazing and fun people. I loved it!”
