Describe your art:
My artwork is based upon the theme of dreams. Dreams can be a series of thoughts, images and fantasies that occur in a person’s mind when asleep. They can be influenced, or they can be completely unrealistic. It is this that provided me with the opportunity to break free, considering and creating pieces that weren’t based upon a particular thought but focused on the imagination and freedom of thought. Through the development of my work, I decided to create a series of bird’s wings which represent this idea of freedom. Flight being a symbol of freedom.
When did you first become interested in art?
I have always been interested in art from a very young age however it wasn’t until I was presented with the opportunity to explore a range of art styles such as Sculpture, Painting and Mixed Media and Textiles that I discovered my love for working and playing with fabrics to create visually appealing and engaging pieces.
What is your favourite tool or material to work with?
I really enjoy working with a variety of materials such as silk and organza to create delicate pieces that explore a range of fabric dying techniques. One of these techniques includes Batik, the art of wax-resistant dyes onto fabric to create beautiful and colourful designs.
Where do you find creative inspiration?
Through the art/textiles that I create, I have gained inspiration from many artists enabling me to respond in ways that are meaningful and contextual. One artist that I have really engaged with is Ann Small, a textile artist, who uses imaginative cutting and manipulating techniques to create engaging surface patterns. This has given me the confidence to become quite playful in my use of fabrics.
What are you going to study next year?
Next year I am going to study Textile Design at Birmingham City University.
