For the fourth lunchtime concert of the term, we were treated to a splendid recital of English songs given by Zsolti Johnson, Form 7. The programme began with two songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Having already displayed high aptitude as an actor in her time at Oakham, Zsolti conveyed a powerful intensity and storminess in The Vagabond, a particular favourite.
She then performed Let Garlands Bring, the cycle of Shakespeare songs by Gerald Finzi. These songs have enjoyed great popularity in the English song repertoire and for good reason. It was clear to see how much both Zsolti and Mr Davis enjoyed singing and playing them. The attention to detail with the text and the expressive range that both performers were able to deliver, the grieving of Come Away Death, the calm of Fear No More The Heat o’ the Sun, and the jovial positivity of It Was a Lover and His Lass.
